There is no such thing as a "perfect movie" and "The Help" is not an exception from that rule. It, however, falls into the select category of "must see" movies.
The excellent qualities is not the primary reason why everyone should see "The Help. although it boasts a sharp and intelligent screenplay (Tate Taylor) based on a famous New York Times Best Seller book of the same name (Kathryn Stockett) a masterful directing (Tate Taylor) a grand ensemble of talented actors (see below) and a memorable soundtrack.
What truly makes "The Help" a must-see movie is that it powerfully shows on the big screen something that most of us might have learned, heard, or read about, but have never experienced or seen with our own eyes. This is a case where a picture is worth a thousand words. It might be impossible for us to travel back in time and immerse ourselves into the ugly reality of the sophisticated humiliation and quiet suffering flourishing in Jackson, Mississippi in 1960s. "The Help" with its emotionally charged, vivid images and a compelling, thought provoking story manages to capture the essence of the historical and social setting.
"The Help" is also a good lesson of humility for all of us. Nowadays it is easy to be disgusted and terrified by the atrocities that some well- educated, church going wealthy white folks were committing about 50 years ago in Jackson, Mississippi. It does not cost us anything to condemn what everyone now agrees was terribly wrong. We do not need to be brave, courageous, or insightful to do that.
We might even consider ourselves a better, wiser, morally superior generation with a stronger self-awareness. A hard to swallow truth of the matter is that 50 years from now the future generation will be judging us. Good chances are that they will be just as disgusted and terrified with some of our behaviors, with our positions on certain social and moral issues, as we currently are terrified and disgusted with the behaviors of our ancestors.
Despite what some critics say "The Help" is not a caricature or a simplistic social pamphlet with an obvious agenda. It maybe does not have a depth of a Dostoevsky's novel, but it is definitely offers a comprehensive, multidimensional view on a very complex problem. It successfully blends several well-developed story lines, each adding a unique value to the movie. Moreover, below the surface "The Help" has some strong thought-provoking undercurrents valuable for independent thinkers.
One of these well-hidden but very powerful messages is a striking conflict between a pillar of the society Hilly Holbrook, representing the empty hypocrisy of the human religious traditions, and a quiet, ordinary African-America maid Aibileen Clark, representing the power of a genuine faith in God.
On the outside, Miss Hilly" Bryce Dallas Howard, in a vivid and memorable performance) is one of the most respectable members of the society, a loving wife and a caring mother, a good Christian who is all about charity balls, helping poor African children, and giving proper respect and recognition to the "Help.
On the inside, however, Hilly Holbrook is a hypocrite and a Chief Pharisee of the town. It does not take a long time for her ignorance and patronizing attitude to turn into a web of lies, cruelty, and deception. You could call her a monster, but please be aware that the same monster might be quietly (or not so quietly) growling inside of you. That is why Hilly Holbrook's moral failure becomes a stern warning of critical importance for all of us. Especially, if we do not want to hear the words that stunned her at the end of the movie: You are a godless woman, Miss Hilly. And all the charity balls did not matter anymore.
On the outside, Aibileen's life is terrible. She is alone. The worst imaginable personal tragedy has been haunting her from the past for many years. Her hard and valuable work that she pours her heart into is not noticed, appreciated, or even fairly compensated. She has to endure all sorts of abuse and humiliation both on the job and outside work.
On the inside, however, something truly beautiful is happening with Aibileen (Viola Davis, in a strong, nuanced performance. Something allows her to show extraordinary love, courage, and faithfulness, to overcome both the personal tragedy and the hard life circumstances. Through many thoughtful, authentic details the movie makes is very clear to us who supports and empowers Aibileen all the way - the same God that Hilly Holbrook has somehow lost in the middle of her perfect high charitable life.
